A participative sculpture project in the urban space

In the city-wide children’s culture project STADTBAU 2007, initiated by the QUARTIER cultural centre, imaginative objects and models for a sculpture were created in the Osterholz-Tenever district. The aim of this cultural project was to make newly created urban spaces tangible and accessible.

In a series of workshops led by Andreas Schneider, young people from the district addressed the architectural, social and urban planning characteristics of their district and consolidated their views regarding the redevelopment process taking place there. Unoccupied places are reinterpreted by modifying outdoor spaces and interconnect urban structures in the surroundings. In designs and models in 1/5 scale, they worked out their very own ideas of a communal area. The pupils of the Koblenzer Strasse school (aged 13 to 15) concerned themselves with spatial concepts, shapes and proportions and translated these into scale models with the aim of creating a communal area and meeting place in the district based on their own wishes and ideas.

A jury of experts selected one of the young people’s designs, which was to find its place as a sculpture in the new ‘OTe’ quarter. Thanks to the financial and idealistic supporters, the selected design was finally realised in full scale as a meeting point, as a place to sit and rest, as a shelter from the rain and a picnic area, as a ‘feature’ for the new, young Tenever, in the midst of the high-rises.
