A new observation tower on the River Lippe is intended, as part of the NaturTalenteLippe project, to enhance the Lippe floodplain landscape as a special site for nature conservation and tourism. The restricted design competition sought to develop an architectural landmark that would bring the South Westphalian lowland region to the attention of nature and sports enthusiasts, whilst at the same time working hand in hand with nature conservation efforts in the Lippe floodplains.
Our guiding principle in the competition was to translate the gentle curves of the River Lippe into a corresponding tower design: the observation tower echoes the meandering river in its organic and dynamic form, reinterpreting it vertically. Four viewing platforms are offset by 90 degrees from one another, allowing visitors to experience different perspectives of the surroundings at various heights. The top platform offers an impressive panoramic view of the surrounding landscape.
Both the ground floor and the first platform are designed to be barrier-free and are therefore easily accessible to wheelchair users. Nesting boxes for birds native to the Lippe floodplains are concealed within the tower façade.
Structurally, the primary framework has been designed as a simple truss system with eight columns arranged in a circular plan. Profiles running in the circumferential direction and infill tension members complement the structure to form a rigid tube that efficiently transfers internal and external loads. The viewing platforms and privacy screens are supported by radially cantilevered sections and are to be clad with regional timber.
The new Auenerlebnisturm captures the unique character of the region and serves as a highlight – for nature conservation and experiencing nature, as well as an architectural landmark!
