Helgolander Strasse School Centre, Bremen

The Helgolander Strasse Secondary School in Bremen-Walle is an integrated district school with around 525 pupils in grades 5 to 10. A further extension blending harmoniously into the complex was to the school centre building, which had already been extended in 1980.

Another component of the contract involved renovation of the existing building. The core of the Wilhelminian style building in Helgolander Strasse was completely renovated in four construction phases during ongoing school operations. Original design elements were restored in close consultation with the monument preservation authorities. In the façade, the windows and doors were recreated in the style of the old design.

The Vegesacker/Helgolander Strasse school ensemble consists of two solid buildings with redbrick façades facing each other and dating from 1910/1911. Both buildings were renovated in accordance with the preservation order. The site with two different types of school also received new extensions and was reorganised.

In order to restore the particularly beautiful interiors and make them visible, colours and materials were greatly reduced. High-quality lighting accentuates the special nature of the space.
