In recent years, the Breitenauschule Plön has grown into an open all-day school (oGts) with increasing student numbers. The former workshop room has recently served as a break and dining room on a shift basis. We have planned a new multifunctional canteen as an extension, which is connected to the listed school building via a weather-protected passageway. The canteen has 75 seats, a kitchen with a serving counter, an office with a seating area, a staff changing room with WC and a storage room.
As a free-standing cube, the new building is pleasantly nestled in front of the listed primary school building in the inner courtyard. A light, transparent connecting passageway links it to the existing building like a footbridge. The glazed façade on the south side of the new canteen and the covered terrace in front create a direct connection and access to the outdoors. A staircase and a barrier-free ramp connect the outdoor area of the canteen directly to the school playground.
The solid sand-lime brick construction with a curtain-type rear-ventilated timber façade blends harmoniously into the school grounds. The roof structure, consisting of glued laminated timber beams visible from the inside, which rest on reinforced concrete round columns, supports an extensive green roof. A timber-aluminium mullion-transom façade, which covers the entire south side and opens up the view of the playground, creates a modern yet natural effect.
