Road map for the townscape of Osterholz-Scharmbeck

Design principles for the town centre were developed by us for the town of Osterholz-Scharmbeck. The aim of this instrument is to define design guidelines for the modernisation and rehabilitation of the existing buildings and for new construction projects included in the redevelopment of Osterholz-Scharmbeck’s town centre.

One particular focus of our concept is on sustainable strengthening of the location by preserving characteristic buildings and elaborating specific characteristics of buildings and open spaces. Identity-creating places such as the market square at the Schlauchturm tower are to be developed by renovation of façades, the creation of new zoning areas and signposting systems leading to public spaces with a high sojourning quality.

Starting from detailed inventorising and assessment of the different types of building and façade, we then developed a set of specifications and showed with reference to examples and system sketches how they are tailored to improving the visual impression conveyed by this urban space. Our recommendations are also aimed at ensuring that no features worthy of preservation or design elements with positive impacts are lost in the course of any future transformations.

Example of design recommendations for a residential and commercial building:

  • The original façade grid should be restored.
  • The design of the ground floor should be adapted to match that of the upper floor.
  • Large-format shop fronts should be divided and should take up the lines of the upper floor.
  • The main entrance should also ensue from the façade grid.
